When I returned to Neve’s chambers, there was a traveling case on the table that I’d never seen before. I watched as Neve undid the buckles on the case and flipped it open. Inside was a grid of cushioned glass vials, and she ran her fingers over each one, inventorying its contents.

“What is that?” I asked.

She didn’t look up. “Nothing that concerns you.”

“It has to do with the dragons, doesn’t it? Am I not your apprentice?”

Neve shut the case with a loud click. “Provisionally,” she said. “You are not ready to learn this.” She sighed, locking the case. “But neither are they, and that’s the hand we’ve been dealt. Very well. You’ll come with me to the first training session this afternoon. But mind that you’re to observe, not to speak. You’ll do exactly what I ask of you and nothing else. I don’t think I need to remind you of what dragons are capable of doing when they are startled.”

I nodded, trying to keep the grin off my face. I was about to come face to face with a dragon—and learn how to bond with one.

Neve and I climbed to the fifth floor. She carried the case, and I walked behind her, mindful of her warning to stay out of the way. No hidden passage for me today. The guards at the door bowed to Neve and let us through.

Neve waved at me to wait as she walked to a man in the center of the chamber and shook his hand. I contented myself with looking about, unable to contain my awe. The space was even grander when I was standing in it, and the dragons! They were at least three times as large as they’d been the last time I’d seen them, though they were still a far cry from the size of the yearlings that had battled in Deletev. They still took my breath away as I watched them bat lazily at each other. Their song was a hum in my head, lazy and contented.

The door opened behind me, and I turned to see the Talons in training enter the room, forming a line in front of me without speaking.

They had arrived without their servants, each in uniform, with their hair unbound. It was a symbol of trust, my father had once told me. They were about my age—younger than I had expected them to be, given the enormity of their responsibilities.

“Welcome. I am the head trainer,” the man next to Neve said. Behind him, his apprentices held open vials of oil, herding the dragons together. The air was scented with a misty lavender fragrance that soothed my mind. “You have arrived here sent on the most sacred of missions by our leader, the Flame of the West. You have been called to serve by bonding with a dragon. Do you accept this duty?”

“We do,” the lords said in unison.

“Very well,” said the trainer. He turned to Neve. “The floor is yours.”

Neve nodded back. “Thank you. You are dismissed.
